Kim Seong-ryong, commander of the Air Force, was born on June 5, 1926 in Mopo-ri, Jihaeng-myeon, Yeongil-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do (Mopo-ri, Janggi-myeon, Nam-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do).
After moving to Japan and completing Ube Middle School in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Tachia Rai Army Flight School, he returned to Korea after liberation and joined the Army Air Base Command in July 1948, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant on March 1, 1949.
After being commissioned, Lieutenant Kim Seong-ryong (then class), who served as a T-6 founding pilot, was selected as an agent to take over the F-51D Mustang fighter aircraft of the U.S. Air Force on June 25, 1950, and was dispatched to Itazuke Base in Japan. He returned on July 2 after a short-term training session, including one practice flight.
He participated in major operations of the Korean Air Force during the war, including operations to subdue the air defense of Jirisan Mountain and Gayasan Mountain in August 1951, shelling of Songrim Steelworks in March 1952, bombing of Pyongyang in August 1952, and supporting the battle of the 351 Hill in Goseong in 1953, and performed a total of 85 sorties.
For this achievement, he was awarded the Ulchi Order of Merit (1951), the Distinguished Flying Cross of the United States (1952), and the Chungmu Order of Merit (1953), during the Korean War.
After the armistice, he served as the commander of the 10th Fighter Wing, the commander of the Air Force Operations Command, the head of the Air Force Academy, and the 10th Air Force Chief of Staff.
While serving as Air Force Chief of Staff, he made various efforts to develop the Air Force, especially by introducing the F-40 bomber, which was considered the world's strongest force at the time, greatly improving the Air Force's operational capabilities.
On 1 January 1969, he was promoted to Air Force Commander for the first time in Air Force history, and then discharged on 1 August 1970.
After leaving the military gate, he served as the 13th National Assembly member in 1988, and died on November 9, 2002, at the age of 76.
His remains were buried at the General 1 Tomb Station at the Daejeon National Cemetery on November 12, 2002.
