while pulling the trigger.

  • Active as a machine gun sharpshooter in the regiment,

Before the final truce negotiations, fierce battles took place in which the enemy and South Korean forces were seized and taken over several times for over two months in order to gain an advantage over each other. About 140,000 shells a month were fired at this place like hailstones. The height of the hill was less than 600m. In the northeast of the Battle Heights, there are many relatively gentle ridges, so it is easy for the North Korean Army to access it, but to the south there is only one steep ridge. It was a good point for observing the enemy. On September 13, 1952, it was 1:15 A.M. A green flare was fired in the sky over the Sudo Heights in Imnam-myeon, Geumseong-gun, Gangwon-do province. The attack by the Chinese and the North Korean forces began. Sgt. Gong Hae-dong fixed his light machine gun. It was hard to even open his eyes because of sand wind and smoke.

Sgt. Gong, the machine gunner of the 1st Battalion, 26th Regiment of the Sudo Division, was in charge of the northwest of the Heights. There were five ways for the Chinese Army to enter Sgt. Gong's unit. Unlike usual, a company or more Chinese assault units attacked each approach. Chinese assault units were equipped with heavy machine guns. A confrontation between one light machine gun and three heavy machine guns was unimaginable. Colleagues were shot and killed nearby. Sgt. Gong thought he had to fight unconditionally. He almost bare his torso and started firing his machine gun. A bullet went through his shoulder. But he didn't take his finger off his trigger until the very end. In the end, after destroying all three Chinese machine guns, he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and collapsed and died on the spot. His finger was still pulling the trigger. Currently, he is called the 'Spirit of the Sudo Heights'.

Sgt. Gong Hae-dong was born in Bongchon-ri, Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu. He was a light machine gun marksman in the regiment. Even the regimental commander admired his shooting skills, freely controlling the single firing and continuous fire. In charge of defending the Sudo Heights, he made enormous contribution in delaying or deterring enemy attacks. In May 1952, the government awarded Sgt. Gong the Eulji Military Medal. The Battle of Sudo Heights resulted in thousands of casualties on both sides. At that time, the Minister of National Defense issued a special discourse to commemorate the achievements of the members of the Sudo Division, which was unusual.
